One of the key roles that educational institutions fulfill is that of raising the intellectual capacity of the region. The community welcomed UH West O‘ahu (UHWO) with open arms this past August thanks to the participation of the ROTC unit and band from the Kapolei High School and the Friends of Kapolei Hale.

Higher education is the great equalizer that cuts across all demographics in raising the probability of economic security and a higher quality of life. It’s projected that by 2020, six out of ten jobs will require a college education. Given this demand, we are grateful to the community and our legislators for their support in making higher education more accessible to the west side. The importance of attaining a college degree grows with each passing year and today, your children or grandchildren can attend a four-year college that is only minutes away from the communities of Hoakalei. Because of Haseko’s generous donation to UHWO’s scholarship fund, nearly 20 students from the Ewa district benefited from their corporate sponsorship.

Now completing graduate school, I wonder what my educational experience would have been like without Head Start. Would I be where I am today? Because of the program, I entered kindergarten with a social, educational and emotional skill set that allowed me to prosper uninhibitedly. I continued in bilingual education until I reached the fourth grade, when I was transitioned out of my Spanish class into an all English classroom. My parents were also key. They instilled in my sisters and me the belief that education is the great equalizer and that with a good education, we could better ourselves. As a second-generation, bilingual, woman of color, I am very fortunate and privileged to be where I am today. Head Start forged the strong foundation needed to put my sisters, myself and countless other Head Start alumni on the road to success.
