"The Singer Solution to World Poverty"
'The Singer Solution to World Poverty', by Peter Singer ..
“The Singer Solution to World Poverty” starts out by telling the reader about a Brazilian Movie where a women by the name of Dora allows a child (whether she knew it or not at the time) to have his organs sold so that she may purchase a new TV.
To me this article seems like its sole purpose is to get people to donate to charity, but Peter Singer’s definition of charity is a bit different, when he says donate he doesn’t mean a couple of dollars here and there, he is saying anything that isn’t being spent on the absolute basic necessities should be sent to help children and until there is no more poverty that is what needs to be done. The idea that every american has excess money just laying around is a bit ridiculous seeing as most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and can barely make ends meat.
What he is suggesting is very unrealistic, there is a huge difference between buying an iPod and taking a kid to an have his organs harvested and sold on the black market. He seems to believe that the only way to help or give back is through a persons wallet which is not true, there are many ways to help or give back to our society starting from something as small as working at your local food pantry or a soup kitchen, donating ones time can be just as valuable as donating money.
Summary Of The Singer Solution To World Poverty - by Lulung
“The Singer Solution to World Poverty” by Peter Singer prescribes a method for eradicating the suffering of poverty stricken children; everyone must donate surplus earned money over the amount necessary for basic living; thirty thousand dollars. Luxuries such as entertainment, extra clothing, and eating out are not permissible as long as there are those in the world who need more money to live. An analogy used as the basis for this argument is that of Bob; a man who chooses to save his expensive car rather than a child in the path of a rushing train. According to Singer, those who refuse to donate their money are just as culpable as Bob. Even donating a reasonable amount is not enough; all excess must be forgone as long as there is suffering from poverty.
